Cindy Miscikowski,
a member of the Los Angeles City Council, has joined AASP and has been added to the list
of Elected Officials who are members of our
organization.
Recent News
has been updated with one story for December 22 about how companies are missing out on
business opportunities if they ignore unmarried couples as consumers. A story for
December 21 reports that the first nation in the world has voted to legalize same-sex
marriage. A story for December 20 focuses on a new national survey showing that a
majority of the public supports several federal proposals that would benefit a wide range
of single people. A story for December 18 reports that married people in Australia
live longer than unmarried people.
Domestic Partner News has been updated with the summary of a financial advice column for
December 18 discussing the need for same-sex couples to take precautionary measures to
protect their economic welfare.
Washtenaw County, Michigan,
has been added to the list of government employers offering
health benefits to same-sex couples. Most government employers with domestic partner
plans, however, include opposite-sex partners in their programs as well.

Recent News
has been updated with two stories for December 17. The first is an editorial
criticizing a proposed ordinance in Lawrence, Kansas, to prohibit more than two unrelated
people from living together in an area zoned for single-family use. The second
concerns the drop in both marriage rates and divorce rates in the Cincinatti area.

Recent News
has been updated with two stories for December 14, one about a new ordinance enacted
in Atlanta which outlaws marital status and other forms of discrimination, and another
about the use of in vitro fertilization by single women in Australia pursuant to a court
order that overturned a law limiting such reproductive technology to married women.
Domestic Partner News has been updated with two stories for December 14, one concerning a
domestic partnership bill that will be introduced in Mexico City next week, and the other
about the defeat of a rule to give benefits to the domestic partners of crime victims in
Minnesota.

Steve May, a
Republican member of the Arizona House of Representatives, has joined AASP and has been
added to the list of Elected Officials who are
members of our organization. The Arizona Republic has
described May as "one of the most articulate voices in the Legislature for fiscal
conservatism and individual rights. His main issues are improving education, increasing
access to affordable health care and protecting individual liberty."
Recent News
has been updated with one story for December 5 about a poll which reveals the changing
attitudes about marriage in France, and one for December 12 about the number of abortions
performed in the United States. A story was also added for December 13 concerning a
new book on divorce and finances which was just released.

Domestic Partner News has been updated with one story for today about the new domestic partner
benefits program for employees of America West Airlines. AWA has followed the lead
of Southwest Airlines by instituting a plan that it open to same and opposite sex domestic
partners of airline employees. Other major airlines, such as Delta, United,
American, Northwest, and US Air, restrict their plans to the partners of gay and lesbian
employees and exclude opposite-sex unmarried partners. A second story reports that
20% of large employers now offer domestic partner benefits. A third story reports on a tax
break proposed for unmarried couples in Norway.

College instituting a domestic partner benefits program for faculty and staff.

Domestic Partner News has been updated with one story about the new domestic partner benefits
program for employees of Southwest Airlines. Unlike all of the other U.S. airlines
which restrict benefits to same-sex partners only, the plan at Southwest is gender neutral
and open to all unmarried partners.
The most recent issue of the
online version of UnmarriedAmerica,
AASP's quarterly newsletter, has been added to the site.

Steven L. Soboroff,
senior advisor to Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, has joined AASP and has been added to
the list of Honorary Members. Soboroff will be on
the ballot as a mayoral candidate in April 2001. Two other mayoral candidates, Los
Angeles City Attorney James Hahn and Los Angeles City Councilman Joel Wachs, have
previously joined AASP as honorary members. Ken Hillman, Lieutenant
in the Los Angeles Police Department, and candidate for Los Angeles City Council, has also
joined AASP as an honorary member. Addie Mae Miller, candidate for
mayor of Los Angeles in 2001 has also become an honorary member of AASP.

International News
Archives has been updated with two stories
about Australia, one on November 16, concerning the rising number of young single workers
who are living in poverty, and the other about a federal proposal to prohibit single women
and lesbians from using various forms of artificial reproductive technologies. A
story has also been added for November 15 concerning unmarried women coming under attack
in parts of Nigeria.
