Re: Request for a Proclamation

Dear ____________,

I am writing to request that you issue a proclamation declaring the week of Sept. 19 - 25, 2004, as Unmarried and Single Americans Week in (insert name of state or city). I am making this request as a resident of (insert name of city or state) and as a member of Unmarried America, a nonprofit and nonpartisan equal-rights organization promoting fairness for unmarried workers, consumers, and taxpayers -- and greater recognition of unmarried voters.

According to the most recent figures from the Census Bureau, nearly half of the households in the United States are now headed by unmarried adults. The majority of households in 13 states are already in the unmarried category, as are the majority of households in more than 300 cities. A list of these cities and states can be found at the following website pages: http://www.unmarriedamerica.org/statestats.htm for all states; and http://www.unmarriedamerica.org/citystats.htm for 300 cities.

For the past two years, governors, mayors and city councils in 33 states have issued proclamations and greetings recognizing Unmarried and Single Americans Week in their jurisdictions. These proclamations can be viewed at the following web page: http://www.unmarriedamerica.org/usaweek/proclamations.htm.

You can visit http://www.unmarriedamerica.org/sample-proc.htm for sample language that may assist you in issuing a proclamation this year. Please send the original of the proclamation to the headquarters of Unmarried America so it can be posted on the organization’s website.

I am sure that your unmarried constituents will be pleased that you took the time to acknowledge their contributions to society as employees, volunteers, family members and good neighbors.

Please mail the proclamation to: Unmarried America, P.O. Box 11030, Glendale, CA 91226. If you have any questions, your proclamation coordinator can contact the organization’s executive director at (800) 993-2277.

Sincerely yours,

                                                            Your name
                                                            Your address
                                                            Your phone number

P.S. Unmarried America would appreciate receiving your proclamation on or before August 25 so that it may posted to our website during the first week of September.
