City contractors in Miami Beach must offer domestic partner benefits

A story published today in the Miami Herald reports that the Miami Beach City Commission gave final approval to a measure Wednesday that officials say will require city contractors to provide the same benefits for domestic partners as they do for spouses.

The ordinance, which was given preliminary approval Sept. 8, is the only one of its kind in the state.

It generally mandates that most companies that bid on competitive city contracts must provide family medical leave, health insurance and other benefits to the registered domestic partners of employees if they do so for spouses. If they fail to provide such benefits, they may lose out to companies that do.

Broward County gives preference to certain contractors who provide equal benefits for domestic partners, but does not require them, according to Miami Beach city staff.
