Canadian province told to offer joint insurance to domestic partners
A story released today by the Canadian Press reports that a tribunal of the Alberta Human Rights Commission ruled in Dec. 4 that the Canadian province of Alberta must offer same-sex couples family health insurance. The ruling means "the Alberta government is in a position to accept same-sex couples as a family, so that gives you all sorts of rights and obligations under the law," one of the plaintiffs in the case, said Keith Purdy. Alberta's socialized health-care system charges $34 a month (US$22) for individual coverage and $68 to cover an entire family.
