California school district extending domestic partner benefits

A story published today by the Long Beach Press Telegram reports that teachers and other employees of the Long Beach Unified School District have negotiated medical benefits for same-sex domestic partners and their dependents.

If union members approve the new contract, which also calls for a 1 percent pay increase, school board members would probably vote to accept the benefits package at their Feb. 4 meeting.

The Long Beach school district would join L.A. County and the city of Long Beach, among others, in extending medical benefits to same-sex domestic partners. The cost of the benefit to taxpayers is not known.

Board member Suja Lowenthal was quoted as being ecstatic about extending the benefit.
