Study reveals the effect of marriage to Australian women

A story published today by the Courier Mail reports that young Australian women are gaining weight rapidly, particularly if they get married.

The latest survey being conducted by Australia's biggest ongoing women's health study reveals women who were aged 18-23 in 1996 gained an average 3kg each in the first four years of the study.

Professor Christina Lee, project manager of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health said it was "amazing how much weight they have put on in just four years".

She said preliminary results from the survey showed the main indicators for young women gaining weight were getting married, having a baby or completing education studies.

The project began when a group of researchers from Newcastle University in collaboration with Queensland University was commissioned by the Commonwealth Department of Human Services and Health.
