Group established to help local dads

A story published today by the Leesville Daily Leader reports that divorce and child custody battles and agreements can wreak havoc on a family, and particularly for children involved. That’s why an organization called "Louisiana Dads" was organized.

"Louisiana Dads" is dedicated to the welfare of children who have had to endure the divorce or absence of their parents.

"We advocate equal parenting time and truth in child support through accountability," said Marc Watson, local chapter organizer.

"Our members are fathers, mothers, grandparents, blue and white collar workers, doctors, and lawyers throughout the state."

Members of Louisiana Dads believe that the system of divorce and custody as it now stands in Louisiana is unfair to children. They believe that children are best reared if they have frequent contact with both parents.

The organization serves as an advocate for legislative change.

"In early 2003, we will be looking to have Senate Bill 160 passed," said Watson. "In part, the Bill asks the state for 160 days of custody for the non-domicile parent and also for the accountability of how the child support is being spent."

Watson also provided some statistics supporting his argument that children thrive best in an environment where two parents are present.

"Ninety percent of homeless or runaway children are from fatherless homes. Seventy-one percent of pregnant teens and high school dropouts and 85 percent of youths in prison lack a dad at home," he said. "Louisiana Dads wants to change some of these statistics."
