Cities for singles

A story released today by Forbes.com reports that nothing is more important for singles than to meet, mingle and dine with other singles, so Forbes looked at Census data to find the ratio of singles in each metro area.

Though fun is what lures singles to a city, jobs are what keep them there. Woods & Poole Economics, based in Washington, D.C., forecasted job growth over the next five years for all the 40 metros. Analysts at ACCRA, headquartered in Arlington, Va., also estimated how expensive it is to be single in each city--based on apartment rents, the cost of a Pizza Hut pizza, a movie ticket and a six-pack of Heineken.

Last year, Forbes determined the buzz factor to account for public perception. This time Forbes used the outcome of an interactive poll--in which we asked Forbes.com users to give a city a thumbs-up, a thumbs-down or a shrug--to come up with singles "buzz."

In the end Forbes came up with the list of the top ten cities suitable for singles:

1. Boston

2. Austin

3. Washington-Baltimore

4.Raleigh-Durham

5. Denver-Boulder

6. San Francisco-Oakland

7. San Diego

8. Houston

9. Minneapolis-St. Paul

10. Atlanta
