The Orlando Sentinel newspaper to include same-sex unions in paid announcements
A story published today by the Orlando Sentinel reports that the paper will begin accepting advertisements from same-sex couples that want to announce their unions in the newspaper. Publisher Kathleen M. Waltz said that the company was still developing a formal policy, but that the goal was to accept "celebrations of many different kinds." Each Sunday, the Sentinel runs paid announcements for weddings, births, engagements and other events under the banner "Celebrations." The paper now joins a growing number of publications that accept announcements from same-sex couples. Beth George, a spokeswoman for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation in New York, said 99 of 1,600 daily newspapers accept such announcements. The New York Times, one of the largest and most-respected papers in the country, recently said it would begin publishing same-sex announcements.
