Malaysian woman dies
while fleeing Islamic vice squad
A story released today by the Associated Press reports that a 32-year-old
Malaysian woman fleeing Islamic police fell four stories to her death when she tried to
escape the hotel room of a male companion, a newspaper reported Tuesday.
An Islamic vice squad raided the budget hotel room in Klang town, 30 kilometers from Kuala
Lumpur, early Sunday after being tipped off that an unwed couple might have been alone
inside, the Sun daily reported.
After banging on the room entrance without receiving any reply, officers
threatened to force down the door. A man in his 30s then opened the door, while the
unidentified woman jumped out the back window in which she fell and died from unspecified
injuries.
Under Islamic law, unmarried couples can be charged with "khalwat" or
"close proximity" if caught in a room alone together. Islamic law prohibits sex
outside marriage and is punishable by jail time and a fine if convicted.
