2000 Census -- AASP Report

Current Population Survey for 2000

Marital Status and Household Data

"Snapshot of Unmarried America:
Sneak Preview of Census 2000"

The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of about 50,000 households conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The survey has been conducted for more than 50 years.

In March of each year, a larger sample of more than 60,000 households are surveyed and more information is collected and a report is released the following March with the results.

In February and March, 2001, the Census Bureau released two reports from the CPS for March 2000.  One focused on the Black population and the other focused on the Hispanic population.  However, data for the general population and general households was also included in both reports.

The information found below is based on that general data from the CPS for March 2000.  The data give us a good idea of what the full census for 2000 will show with respect to marital status and living arrangements.

What the full 2000 Census results will likely show:

Number of unmarried adults:  82 million Number of adults who are currently divorced:  20 million
Number of singles living alone:  27 million Percent of households containing married couples:  52.8%
