Essay by Professor Laura Essig (Barnard College)
Sociology Professor Laura Essig wrote an essay for Salon
Online in which she says that, despite the fact that she is a lesbian and has a same-sex
partner, she is not jumping for joy over the new civil union law in Vermont. Rather
than advocating for the legalization of same-sex marriage, Professor Essig believes that
marriage should be left to religious institutions. The government, she says, should
not discriminate on the basis of marital status or family structure. All people,
whether they live alone, in a couple, or in a larger group, should be treated similarly as
far as rights and benefits are concerned.

don't care if it is legal, I still think it's wrong -- and I'm a lesbian,"
