Municipalities Requiring Government Contractors
to Provide Domestic Partner Benefits

The following cities and counties require businesses contracting with the municipality to provide benefits to domestic partners employees working for the contractor if such benefits are provided to spouses of the contractor's employees.

Contractor Law Applies Equally to Same and Opposite Sex Domestic Partners:

Broward County (FL)*
Los Angeles City (CA)
San Mateo County (CA)
Seattle (WA)**
Tumwater (WA)

* The Broward law only gives a bidding preference to contractors who offer such benefits and does not actually require them to do so.

** The San Mateo law requires local contractors to give benefits to couples who have registered with the State of California.  The state registry is open to same-sex partners of any adult age and to opposite-sex partners if both parties are over the age of 62.  To the extent that the state registry discriminates against younger heterosexual couples, so does the San Mateo law.
