Congress returns to work with a
greeting from unmarried Americans

Washington, D.C., April 23 / PRNewswire/ – "82 Million Unmarried Americans Deserve to Know Why." That is the headline of a large ad in the Washington Post which greeted members of Congress as they returned to work today after their Spring recess.

The ad was placed by the American Association for Single People. It is the first time a group representing the interests of unmarried Americans has spoken to Congress through an advertisement such as this.

During the next few weeks, both houses of Congress will continue debating which Americans should get tax relief and how much. So far, virtually no attention has been paid to the issue of unfair taxation of single and unmarried people.

Noting that "we are 40% of the nation’s workforce" and "47% of the nation’s households," the two-thirds page ad asks WHY:

bd10267_.gif (311 bytes) we are forced to pay a disproportionately high share of taxes

bd10267_.gif (311 bytes) the current debate on tax reform ignores us

bd10267_.gif (311 bytes) the Democrats put all of their focus on reform for "working families"

bd10267_.gif (311 bytes) the Republicans want to repeal the marriage penalty for some joint filers but keep the marriage bonus for most joint filers

The ad lists various examples of marital status discrimination in the death tax, income tax, and social security tax.

"We want to move our elected officials and political party leaders from a place of insecure silence into an ongoing conversation with unmarried Americans," said the group’s Executive Director, Thomas F. Coleman.

AASP is sending representatives to Washington from May 1 - 3 on a fact finding mission. The group is asking officials to share their views, if they have any, about unfair taxation of unmarried Americans.

"We’ll have plenty to report to our members and to all single and unmarried Americans when our trip is over, including a list of who reached out to us and those who snubbed us," Coleman said.

"AASP fights for equal rights for all single and unmarried adults, whether they are men or women, gay or heterosexual, young or old, and regardless of race, religion, political affiliation, or disability status," Coleman explained.
